Origin and Development of the Game - Cowbell Golf

Two remarkable things about Cowbell Golf are its simplicity, and its durability:

  1. Everyone can play, from the best
to the worst, and all will enjoy
    the game.

  2. The initial Cowbell Golf set, fabricated in 1947, is still in
    daily use.

A.G. Heinsohn, Jr., a textile manufacturer, purchased a wild, Tennessee mountain top at Norton Creek in 1947. After building his home, he instructed his fourteen year old son to make a several hole golf course on the south side of the house so he might entertain his guests. Practicing with a small bulldozer, the boy managed to carve out three short iron holes, and one two hundred yard down-the-spine-of-the-ridge hole where the tee shot had to land perfectly on the tiny, postage stamp green, or the ball bounced off the mountain-side to feed bears and bobcats, and never be seen by human eyes again.

At the inauguration party for the course, all balls in the host's possession were quickly lost, and the difficulty of having a "home made" golf course on a mountain top became laughingly and abundantly clear.

At dinner that evening, the son suggested a shorter course just around the house and gardens, where players could ring a suspended bell instead of sinking a ball in a hole on an expensive, high maintenance green. Shortly, equipment was fabricated, rules devised, and the sport began. It became so popular the son finally has decided to bring it to the public.

Anyone with a yard and a bit of imagination can devise a challenging course. Currently, there is talk of forming local and regional associations in order to have championship contests and prizes. We invite you to let us know your feelings on this. Once you have set up your own course and named it, please describe it to us by sending us a sketch with distances and hole descriptions, including course hazards. (Color photographs also would be nice, for we will print occasional pictures in our periodic publication, Cowbell Golf.) Upon receiving this information, we will examine, number, register and approve your course so that you may participate in this rapidly growing new golf sport, and receive announcements of contest and prizes.

Imagine having your own new sport at home! A thirty to forty-five minute golf course in your own yard, that everyone can play!
